What is Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011. It was allocated to children from low-income families who were known to be eligible for free school meals in both mainstream and non-mainstream settings, and children who had been looked after continuously for more than six months.

Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit. However, they are responsible for strategy use that makes use of this additional funding in order to support all pupils, specifically directing efforts at low-income families and the other target groups.

Research shows that those pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds often do not do as well as their more advantaged peers during their schooling, and the pupil premium funds are aimed at helping to bridge the gap. In all schools, money is allocated to initiatives to best ensure pupils reach their potential, both academically and socially.
