Yr4 spelling draft

Summer 1

Week 1

Our new spelling rule, set on Friday 12th April is words where a suffix is added to words ending in 'y'.

The words children can practise on Spelling Shed for a test on Thursday are: merriment, happiness, plentiful, penniless, happily, prettiest,
nastiness, beautiful, pitiful, silliness

Week 2

Our new spelling rule, set on Friday 19th April is words that are plurals with possessive apostrophes. Children have previously learnt about possessive apostrophe + s to show that one thing belongs to another. For example: the dog has a ball becomes the dog's ball. The apostrophe always goes after the noun (the thing).

This week's spellings (in orange) look at where there is a plural noun (more than one of something). Most plural nouns ends in s: two girls, three boys, four babies, five ladies, seven cat

To show something belongs to these, the apostrophe is added after the s.

girls’, boys’, babies’, ladies’, cats’

However, some plurals are irregular:

one child becomes two children
one mouse become two mice
one man becomes two men
one woman becomes two women
one goose becomes two geese

Since these plural nouns do not end in s already, add 's to show possession:

children’s, men’s, mice’s, women’s, geese's.

A good check: cover up everything after the apostrophe (') and you should see the right noun.
